Frequently Asked Questions
How many students do you take? And how many audition?
For the BA (Hons) Acting course, the maximum intake is 32 students at ALRA South and 32 students at ALRA North.
For the MA Professional Acting course, the maximum intake is 16 students at ALRA South and 16 students at ALRA North.
We see around 10 applicants for every place on each course.
Is there accommodation?
No. Students at ALRA live in privately-rented accommodation in the surrounding area. We do arrange an Accommodation Day for the summer before you start with us, where first year students can meet each other and team up to look for houses together.
Can I teach at ALRA?
Can I pay by credit card?
We are able to accept credit card payments over the phone. Please ring the London office and ask for the Finance Officer. ALRA also accepts cheques, bankers' drafts and direct bank transfers.
Do you have part-time courses?
The acting courses at ALRA are full time. However, ALRA does sometimes host short courses and workshops.Check the 'Short Courses & Workshops' page for further information.
Can I get a Student Loan?
For details of whether you may be eligible for a Student Loan, please go to the Fees page of our website.
What are the hours of training?
Studying at ALRA means working from 8.45am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday, regardless of which course you are on. MA Directing students work slightly different hours in some modules depending on placements but still attend the equivalent of full time.
What is the average age of an ALRA student?
This varies. There is no upper age limit on any ALRA course; students are accepted on the basis of ability, irrespective of age. Students on the BA (Hons) Acting course are commonly between 18 and 25, but it is not unusual for students of 30+ to begin the course. On the Postgraduate Acting course, students must be 21 or over, but applications are regularly received from students in their 40s and older.
Is there funding available?
Yes. Both the full-time Acting courses are part-funded by the Dance and Drama Award (DaDA) scheme. Tuition fees are reduced to £1,275 per year for the students who show the most potential at audition. The school’s allocation of awards is reassessed annually, but has been in the region of 20 for the last several years on the BA (Hons) Acting course, and five on the MA Professional Acting course. DaDA recipients are also eligible to apply for assistance with their remaining fees and living expenses. Full details can be found in the Fees section of the website. You can take a look at our past students who have won funding awards here.
How much are the fees?
Please visit the Fees section of the website for further details.
What qualifications do you offer?
The BA (Hons) Acting course leads to:
BA (Hons) Acting (awarded by St Mary’s University Twickenham)
Level 6 Diploma in Professional Acting (awarded by Trinity College, London)
The MA Professional Acting course leads to:
MA Professional Acting (awarded by St Mary’s University Twickenham)
Level 5 Diploma in Professional Acting (awarded by Trinity College, London)
We audition more than 1,000 applicants a year. Due to the large numbers of candidates applying, we regret that we are unable to provide individual feedback. Where possible and time allows, we can provide some group feedback. The decision of the school is final.
Can I send you an audition tape/DVD?
For international applications, work can be viewed online and an indicative result given to save on travel expenses where we are sure an auditionee has not reached the standard. Applicants will then be invited to attend in the usual manner. Attendance at a scheduled audition/interview is the only route of entry to ALRA courses.
When are your auditions?
Auditions for full-time Acting courses take place at both campuses from October through until May, normally in the half-terms and holiday periods. We also audition at other locations in the UK which are announced on this page. This year's dates are available to view as part of the online application process. Foundation Acting auditions take place at both campuses from May onwards.
Our prospectus is available on our website. We like to save paper, so it's available to download here.
Do you have Open Days? How do I book?
ALRA holds Open Days in the Autumn term on the Saturday of the productions. Booking is recommended and you can find details on our What's On page.
Can I reschedule my audition?
